Computer Animation - The Variety Of Jobs Is Mind Boggling

One of the very hottest job paths at the moment is a career in computer animation. A computer animator usually works with state of the art hardware and software, creating anything from 3D logos to animated films. The entertainment business is seen as particularly cool right now, and the number of people wanting to enter it is quite large. One particularly popular sector is the computer games area, particularly creating and drawing characters for those games. The range of jobs available for a computer animator can be mind boggling. If you don’t like the entertainment field, how about advertising or design? You could even work as an architectural draftsman. In fact, there is hardly any industry that doesn’t require or use computer animators. Having said that, it's important to note that once you land a job as an animator, you will need to keep on top of your chosen career and never stop learning.

The rate of advancement in the computer animation sector is frighteningly fast. Hardly a week goes by without the announcement of some new improvement in either hardware or software. You will need to continually educate yourself throughout your career, and many companies will help you with in house courses and seminars.

The first step toward your chosen career is to decide what sector you want to enter. It is worthwhile to get hold of some industry related magazines and newspapers and check out first hand what jobs are available. There's always the chance that you may find a sector that appeals to you and which also has plenty of jobs available. Once you have decided which type of job you’d like, you will need to get training. You can either do this via a school or as an intern. Sometimes it is possible to do both at the same time.

Once you qualify don’t expect to just proceed directly into the job you have chosen - almost nobody does. You will probably have to work as an assistant, creating backgrounds or resizing texture maps for a year or so, before you get to become an animator’s assistant. Don’t let this get you down too much. You are gaining experience, and you are also meeting people, some of whom will undoubtedly be in a position to give you your dream job one day.

There is little doubt that getting a career in computer animation started is going to be difficult. It is basically just a matter of perseverance and dogged determination. Keep on refreshing your skills, keep on top of technical advances, and keep networking, and you will eventually be heading towards the top of your chosen career.
